When you’re in a Social Media hole, stop digging

Boy, has the restaurant chain Applebee's had quite the time lately or what? An Applebee’s employee, Chelsea Welch, posted a copy of a receipt to Reddit that has gained a lot attention over the past week. It all started after a customer crossed out a mandatory 18% tip on her bill and wrote, “I Give God 10%. Why do you Get 18?" Welch was not the waitperson who served the snarky customer, but she did snap a photo, the posting of which violated Applebees corporate policy. And here’s where the fun begins.

Applebee’s fired the server in question…. This created a fury of rage on the Internet, with social media users taking to their weapons of choice and lambasting away, thousands at a time, against the restaurant’s decisions. Numerous “Boycott Applebee’s” groups sprung up on Facebook, along with “Rehire Chelsea Welch” and other similar groups. Applebee’s website has a “What’s the Buzz” widget that shows what people are saying on Twitter about the company. It’s been non-stop attacks, all publicly displayed on Applebee’s own page.”

Applebee's social media team with their back and forth with angry social media followers responded by saying, “We wish this situation didn’t happen….” Not the best reply.
